Developing literacy skills begins at birth and continues throughout the toddler and preschool years. The best way to ensure a child has the skills necessary to learn to read is having someone read aloud to them. The Library has a new program to encourage this called 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. Any child, 0-5, or until they begin Kindergarten, is eligible to participate. After filling out a registration card, you(the adult) will receive a folder with directions and the first book log, 1-100. When the first log is filled, bring it to the Library for a sticker and receive the second log. At teh 500 book mark, children earn a book. At the 1000 book mark, children earn a t-shirt!
Every book your child listens to read by anyone counts, as long as they listen to the entire story. Children learn by repetition. Count that special book as many times as you read it.
Books read in daycare/preschool/story time count. No need to know the title, just write ‘preschool’ on the book log.
Siblings can share a book log as long as they read the same books. Register each child separately but write both names on the ready log.
How long does it take to read 1000 books? 3 books per day x 1 year= 1,095 books!

The Library spruced it’s entry this past fall with new paint on the front door. In an effort to make the meeting room darker for screen presentations and to save energy, blinds were purchased for the sky lights and back door and window. The Friends stepped up and purchased a new copy machine that prints in color and is networked to the computers for scanning and printing.
